The 13th Season of Ubu’s Other Shoe Staged Readings kicks off this Friday night with PLACEBO, a quirky comedy written by Melissa James Gibson and directed by Danielle McNamara.

“Did you know that “insurmountable” depends on your definition of “mountable”? Well it does, does it not? Stick around. And did you know that “Placebo” means “I will please” and that this was actually a term for the professional mourners of the Middle Ages? Hang on. There’s more where that came from.” — From a review of the play in the NY Theatre Guide Read more…

This extremely smart and funny play will make you laugh and make you think. A perfect combo in my book. The story goes like this:  Louise is working on a placebo-controlled study of a new female arousal drug. As her work in the lab navigates the blurry lines between perception and deception, more and more of these same questions pertain to her life at home. With uncanny insight and unparalleled wit, Melissa James Gibson’s affectionate comedy examines slippery truths and the power of crossed fingers.

PLACEBO features the talents of Emy Authier, Tony Costa, Sam Artho-Bentz and Nicole Jameson and plays for three shows only this weekend, August 5-6. There will be a talk-back with the cast and the director after Friday night’s show. You can get your tickets for this weekend’s shows HERE or better yet, SUBSCRIBE to all SIX Ubu’s Other Shoe Staged Readings and guarantee great seats all year long!

TheDrowsyChaperone-PosterThe cast and crew of The Drowsy Chaperone are kicking it into high gear this week and I do mean high-kicking! There’s also tap-dancing, delightful songs, slapstick comedy and much, much more. Our 70th Season kicks off in style with this Tony Award-winning musical comedy on August 19th. Called “The Perfect Broadway Musical!” by NY Magazine, and filled with one show-stopping number after another, this loving send-up of 1920’s musicals will brighten your day, make you forget about politics and send you home with a smile on your face.

Tickets for individual shows are now on sale, and you can buy your tickets HERE … but I’ve got a better idea for you. Why not BUY SEASON TICKETS? It’s a much better deal. You remember what happened last season, don’t you? It really wasn’t that long ago. Remember that cute comedy Sylvia last August?  SOLD-OUT.  The Foreigner? SOLD-OUT. Wit? SOLD-OUT. Bye, Bye Birdie?  ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, COMPLETELY SOLD-OUT!

CastoroLogoWebJust one more thing before I go:  We’re very happy to welcome a new wine partner to the Little Theatre!  Castoro Cellars wine will be served at all performances of The Drowsy Chaperone and we can’t wait to share it with you!  Dunning Vineyards has been an awesome wine partner for many years, and we will still be serving Dunning wine at many of our shows, but there are so many wonderful wineries on our beautiful Central Coast that we thought it was time to share, and taste, the wealth. We will be showcasing several different wineries throughout our 70th Season and we can’t wait to lift a glass or two with you. Why not arrive a little early for the show and share a glass with friends? The lobby and the bar open at 6 pm for 7 pm shows and at 1 pm for 2 pm matinees. Cheers!

(And I hope to see you at Placebo this weekend!)
