Our 70th Anniversary Season is finally here and its fabulous! The Drowsy Chaperone opened last weekend to enthusiastic audiences who laughed all the way through this “fun, frothy production.” Winner of five Tony Awards in 2006, including Best Book and Best Original Score, this loving send-up of 1920’s musicals is an absolutely hilarious comedy set in a frolicsome musical…or is it a frolicsome musical set in a hilarious comedy? The review by Sarah Linn in Tribune Ticket today says it all:
“For an entertaining night at the theater, look no further than this light-hearted Broadway hit, a playful send-up of Jazz Age musicals.”
“As always, the Little Theatre makes the most of its performance space with a sleek and versatile set by David Linfield and lighting by Kevin Harris…Keith Wetzel’s glitzy costumes make as much of an impression as the characters who wear them. “
“[Mike] Mesker is a hoot as the Man in Chair, an opinionated musical theater fan with a seemingly endless supply of wry wisecracks.”
“[Tim] Stewart is superbly cast as stuffed shirt Robert…”
“Like her co-star, [Melanie] Marie has a strong voice and a winning stage presence.”
“[Karen Kahn] Pearson is deliciously languid as the Drowsy Chaperone.”
“As fluffy as an ostrich feather on a flapper’s dress, The Drowsy Chaperone…it’s fabulous stuff.”
Directed by Suzy Newman, with musical direction by Mark Robertshaw and choreography by Andrew Silvaggio, The Drowsy Chaperone is the perfect kick-off to our 70th Anniversary Season. Get here early for drinks at the theatre bar – we’re even serving martinis this Friday and Saturday! Lobby and bar open one hour before show time. This one is going to be a sell-out very soon, so don’t delay, join the celebration of our 70th Season and get your tickets today!
